It was first discovered in 1868 in Canada by Henry How, a Canadian chemist, mineralogist and geologist. The howlite has a white marble appearance but can be gray, black or brown veined. Some types of howlit are pure white. It is a porous stone that absorbs paint perfectly and is therefore suitable for imitating other gemstones.

Use of howlite
Howlite is usually used to make ornaments, small carvings, or jewels for jewelry. Although howlite is usually inexpensive, it still has a wealth of properties that make it a popular gemstone for making jewelry. Due to its porous pattern, howlite is also easy to color to mimic other minerals. It is particularly suitable for imitating turquoise due to the similarity of the vein pattern. Howlite is also sold in its natural state, e.g. called white turquoise, but of course this is not the same as the real white turquoise that is usually mined in the US.
The most important occurence of howlite
Canada, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, USA (especially California), Mexico, Russia, Germany, Turkey, Namibia and Pakistan.
