Chalcedony variants differ in colour and pattern. It is essentially a microcrystalline version of quartz. Chalcedony is formed in silica-rich cavities, deposits. The physical properties of chalcedony depend on the conditions under which it crystallises, and its density and hardness are slightly lower than those of quartz. It is probably named after an ancient city. Its structure is porous and therefore easy to stain.
