It got its name from the yellowish color (from the word lemon).
This color is caused by its iron content. The raw crystals of citrine are called yellow crystals. Under its own name, it is never marketed as a citrine. Citrine is a rare mineral. Amethyst or smoky quartz can be discolored by heating. These artificial lemons are recognizable by their pale reddish hue, in contrast to the real lemon, which is mostly pale yellow in color.

In the past, citrine was used to falsify topaz and was called Brazilian topaz. The color of Madagascar citrine is topaz yellow.

Occurence of citrine
Most citrines come from the Brazilian states of Goyaz and Minas Gerais. Their color is lemon-orange. It is also found in citrine in the USA, Madagascar, Argentina, Burma, Spain, Scotland and Russia.
